Board Announces New Superintendent

Following a national search, the ĐÔ¸Ł±¦ is pleased to announce the appointment of Karim Hachlaf to the position of Superintendent, effective April 1, 2024.

Board Chair Bill Brassington:

“Karim has an exceptional track record as a proven leader, and he has the skills to build upon what makes the Burnaby School District such a great place to learn and work.”

Hachlaf has been the Superintendent of the New Westminster School District since 2018. He began his career as a teacher in the North Vancouver School District in 1999. He quickly took on various leadership positions there before going to New Westminster in 2017 as an Associate Superintendent.

Karim Hachlaf:

“As a long-time resident of Burnaby, and with my own children attending Burnaby Schools, I am both excited and honored to take on the role of Superintendent for the Burnaby School District. I am looking forward to building on the district’s current successes and collaborating with students, staff, parents and the community as we work together to shape the future.”

Trustees are working on a new strategic plan to take the Burnaby School District forward for the next four years. Brassington noted that Hachlaf shares the Board’s priorities.

“Karim has a strong commitment to Reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion that guides his work. We are confident his leadership will enrich the Burnaby School District’s ongoing commitment to inclusive education and the success of all our students.”

Hachlaf holds a Master of Education, Administration and Leadership from the University of British Columbia, as well as a Bachelor of Education, Secondary and a Bachelor of Arts, Human Kinetics – both also from UBC.

Trustees also wish to extend sincere thanks to all our partner groups who contributed valuable input during the interview process. A special thank you to student leaders from the District Student Advisory Council who, for the first time during the process to select a Superintendent, provided the voice of the Burnaby School District’s 25,000+ students.
